Description

Gate to Centauri is a science fiction novel and thrilling political intrigue by Richard D. Mann.

Excerpt:

Before he disappeared, Stan warned Clete to be careful with the project.

"The Directorate is controlling the world economy, now. That's not helping us any, either," Stan had said.

"It's difficult to predict the next move; things have gone so fast recently."

"And that's one good reason to take more precautions this time." Clete glanced around to see if anyone were listening. "Every step of this project is sent from our lab computer to my home computer. And it's all in code. I'm not that trusting of all our own high echelon people in the company."

Stan raised his eyebrows. "Smart thinking. We also have to keep a certain portion of our work up here," he added, pointing to his head. “I’m still burned at what happened last year when Washington sent their own men in here to help us on the laser intensifier and eventually classified the project, even tearing out our lab equipment we used to develop it. They said we weren't making sufficient progress and carted it off to Washington."

"Hah! We weren't making progress. It was almost finished. But, the emergency laws passed during the last crisis allows them almost dictatorial powers to do it," Smith returned. "But, I hope to take measures to keep it from happening this time.

"There is a difference this time. The public knows that we are working on some type of device that can transmit objects, very small ones, for now. The news media is speculating that we might be developing a method to put the freight carriers out of business and that industry is worried. And, this is going to be too big to hide. Due to media reports, the public suspects that we are working on developing matter transmitters as one method to solve the fuel and transportation crisis. One newswoman labeled our device a 'gate.'"

"Well, that not a bad name for it," Stan said. "That's just what we hope it will become."

A transportation gate for people is what they really had in mind, Clete thought. They would not mention that aspect of it outside of this lab. I just wish Amanda were here to see it, he thought, regressing back to January of that same year when Amanda died from Cancer. Nineteen years of happy marriage and she was taken away from him. He still had his children, but it would never be the same for any of them without their mother. But, it brought the family, not all that close at the time, back together.
