Are you an artist or craftsperson? Do you do trade shows and fairs to sell your work? Most business books show you how to draw customers INTO your booth. I'll help you identify the people you need to get OUT of your booth. There are people who shouldn’t be in your booth at an art or craft show.
You know the people I mean. For every person that actually buys your work, there will be a dozen folks, perhaps even a hundred, who have absolutely no intention of buying your work. You don’t necessarily need to boot every non-customer out of your booth! Not every transaction is about money, not by a long shot. Many transactions are about sharing energy, opportunity, and connection. Some people are prospects—they’re interested but they’re not ready to buy. And I’ve had plenty of non-customers who are wonderful and amazing and supportive and helpful. People who have introduced me to galleries, to magazine editors, to their friends who could be my customers. All these folks are welcome in my booth.
But no one needs a “bad transactionâ€. There are times when someone is being a jerk, a downer, a whiner or simply an energy-vampire. If they aren’t driving other customers out of your booth, they are practically driving YOU out of your booth. And out of your mind.
You must contain and deal with that negative energy. Not only your sales, but your peace of mind may depend on it. I share suggestions and insights that have worked for me. When it comes to my booth and my art, I strive to maintain good energy. You’ll see that most of my solutions are not hostile, rude or mean. If you manage these people courteously and patiently, many of them will even thank you—even as you’re guiding them out of your booth.
So read, ponder, practice, enjoy. And make space in your booth—and your life—for the people who REALLY want to buy your work.
