The Timid Canon is Nicolas Copernicus. This part of Koestler's Sleepwalkers is a well written description of the life and work of Copernicus and is a critical assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of his' heliocentric model of the solar system.
Koestler's book Sleepwalkers is considered one of the finest treatises about the history of 16th and 17th century Astronomy.
