I am, and always have been, an advocate of “Positive Reinforcement Training”. All dogs love to please their owners, so this type of training is perfect for dogs, all of whom love to receive praise.
Remember when you were a kid and your parents rewarded you for good grades? Maybe you were rewarded with a dollar for every A. Dogs are the same, although their rewards are pats, praise and tasty treats.

Positive reinforcement dog training uses praise and treats to reward your dog when (s)he does something you want him/her to do. Because the praise and reward makes repetition of the behavior much more likely, positive reinforcement is an extremely powerful tool when shaping or correcting your dog's behavior.

This book covers in detail such things as teaching good house manners, good manners outside the home, inappropriate chewing, separation anxiety, and a great deal more.

Positive reinforcement training results in a confident dog, anxious to please his owner. On the other hand, cowed, submissive dogs created by using physical punishment to “train” is psychologically damaging for the dog and can possibly have dangerous consequences for its owners.
