Description

A Christian of any tradition and one who knows little of church history, will find this book a good place to start. It is meant to be an easy read and it should encourage evangelicals and other Christians to do what many have failed to do; read about their history. It covers a wide range of topics and a long period of time, but it can be dipped into or read in its entirity.
It is written from an evangelical point of view, but the author understands the position of fellow Christians from other western traditions. It's content is deliberately British with the emphasis on the English churches.
Evangelicals trace their theological origins to the beginning of Christianity and they place a value upon the Christian Bible as the revealed record of God's truth. The word evangelical was ascribed to those who supported Luther in his rebellion in Europe in the sixteenth century and has subsequently been associated with the revivals of the eighteenth century in Britain and America. Christians in earlier periods may have not recognised the word, but with hindsight, it can be seen that many movements in the church could be described as proto- evangelical, some of which were supportive of the Reformation and some were absorbed by it.
In modern times the Church of England has been exercised about some liberation issues such as the ministry of women and gay rights. These are on-going, but this edition has included some discussion of their present status.
A comprehensive account of the scientific issues most troubling to the Christian church is covered in the later chapters and should give those with or without a scientific approach, an insight into the issues over the last couple of centuries.
Evangelical Christianity, without some of the entanglements that have afflicted it in recent times, is a manifestation of the historic and apostolic Christian faith.
For readers who may be encouraged to read church history further, a comprehensive bibliography has been included, which should keep them absorbed for some time.
