Description
In THEY ARE MY SONG we are introduced to the Elder, Mamm of Dunnottar, in the year 487 AD of what is now known as Scotland.
It is a time of change - and a time when the ancient mysteries are still a part of everyday life. The Sidhe, the 'Pict', the Angle, the Pagan, the Culdee, the Christian - all are alive, well, and thriving with the only conflict being traditional raiding parties and possibly fending off 'outsiders' who seem to think that people are also part of the raiding loot, to be taken and sold.
Mamm of Dunnottar has an heirloom under-bed storage chest made by her mother's mother's mother a couple of hundred years before the time of THEY ARE MY SONG.
As the Long Dark of 487 AD is a time for story-telling in the roundhouse of Dunnottar, Mamm tells the generational stories of the history of her heirloom.
Mamm of Perth is the first of the women who have had the chest in their keeping; she is the maker of it.
As Mamm of Dunnottar tells the story in the evenings by the fire during the Long Dark at Dunnottar, two story lines are in play.
The Cast of Characters at Dunnottar are struggling with grief and guilt, and helping each other to get through the aftermath of a recent savage battle that has taken from them two of their own.
The story line of Mamm of Perth follows the life of this woman through pain, fear, drama, love, loss, triumph, hope, and renewal - which we have all been through in our own lives some two thousand years later.
As her daughters grow, Mamm of Perth must learn to both relinquish them and keep them safe in her heart. She passes the cherished under-bed storage chest to one of those daughters, and its story continues.
The affairs of the larger world play a part in the history of the chest - it travels pretty extensively and does its part ... from a cradle for newborns to battlefields to the far reaches of the Dead Sea and home again, this little storage chest begins earning its heirloom status from the start.
Meanwhile, back on Dunnottar in 487 AD, an unexpected winter visitor shows up with an unusual companion, one who has long been familiar to and greatly loved by Mamm.
The two taken in battle, Danann and Sidhelagh of Dunnottar, continue to make their presences felt and their Voices heard, bringing comfort and healing to their people.
The spirituality of these our people is understated but a very real force in their everyday lives; it is a gift of the Mother.
Mamm of Perth goes far back into a time we know very little about; it is a journey worth taking.
