You should not wait for your guidance counselor to come to you because many guidance departments across the country may be under staff. The fall of your senior year, you will begin to send out your applications beginning in October, November and December. Depending on the type of schools that you are applying to, (for the most part) your applications will go out after the first quarter of your senior year. Simultaneously, you should be also getting information on financial aid, local, institutional and national scholarships.
Even though, money is not discussed much in this process but where you will end up depends on money. Financial aid packages will determine where you will attend college. To apply to colleges and worry about paying for college after you have been accepted is a big mistake.
In the spring of your senior year, you will begin to receive (for the most part) college admission decisions with your financial aid package to follow. Once you have received all of your financial aid packages, you will have to decide which college you will attend by May 1st of your senior year. Your guidance counselor will be there to help you with this final process. Your decision will be based on what school you and your family can afford.
Using this booklet will assist you in working with your guidance counselor assuming you have one.
