Description
The book outlines very recent improvements in HIV therapy, since 2010. It is a comprehensive overview suitable for doctor, students, people living with HIV as well as for friends and family of people fighting the disease. Some quotes from the book:
"Crixivan is available as capsules containing 200 or 400 mg. The usual dose is 800 mg three times a day. It is best to take Crixivan on an empty stomach together with liquid (water, juice, coffee, tea, milk or juice) but you can also take Crixivan with a light meal. It is important that the meal is low fat, as fat reduces the absorption of Crixivan from the gut. In practice it means that you can take Crixivan with a low-fat breakfast (without cheese or other dairy products except milk)."
"If it turns out that you are allergic to sulfa preparations, or side effects have been severe, you may instead be treated with pentamidine. It is a treatment in which the drug is administered directly into a vein once a day for three weeks. Here you need to be hospitalized during the entire period. The most common side effects are effects on the pancreas (pancreatitis), effects on kidney function and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Pen-tamidin can also be given by means of inhalations, where you inhale the substance - it is used in prevention of PCP pneumonia, but sadly it is not effective enough in an acute treatment."
"HIV can cause a slowly progressive encephalitis: HIV encephalopathy. This encephalitis is sometimes called the AIDS dementia, because the most common symptoms are fatigue, difficulty with memory and concentration problems. However, there may also be other effects as paralysis and mental problems. HIV encephalopathy is usually seen only in people who also have other serious HIV-related diseases."
"Toxoplasmosis is treated with Sulfadiazine and pyrimethamine (Daraprim) simultaneously in six weeks. The most common side effects are skin rash, fever and Operat-ing of the renal function. If you get serious side effects, you can get clindamycin (Dalacin) instead. As the treatment with pyrimethamine over time can lead to vitamin deficiencies, you will usually also get vitamin supplements (folinic acid, leucine covorin)."
