A formula for contacting the state government in any capacity is to use the website "state.zz.us", the zz representing the two letter abbreviation of the state, for example:

state.zz.us becomes state.al.us for alabama.

Try marvel.loc.gov/federal/state.local for general government information.

For cities, refer to the cities section and type in the city name followed by .com, .gov, .net, .org and .us. Try typing the name of the city in followed by the state two letter abbreviation then us like natchez.ms.us or newyork.ny.us.

An option is co.name of county.two letter state abbreviation.us like co.honolulu.hi.us.

Another option is community.name of community.two letter state abbreviation.us like

community.floyd.va.us

For towns, try:

town.ashland.va.us

For cities try:

ci.hopewell.va.us

Beyond the free tourist guides from the many tourist bureaus out there, Fodor's and Frommer's each sell United States tourist guides that go around a thousand pages each and sell at a good price in paperback form.

If you plan to travel in the western states, Sunset Magazine (sunset.com), 800-967-3189 has lots of ads about tourism places and a free feature where you circle what tourist info you want on a postcard and they send it to you or call the above number and ask if they have brochures for the area you're interested in.
