If you've ever suffered from depression, real depression then you know the difference between a little down period and a serious problem. I tried prescriptions for a short period but that felt like failure (which it is NOT a failure to those who really need them) so through other therapy and mindfulness training I learned and am constantly learning how to be healthy and happy again. However, I still occasionally feel that darkness gnawing somewhere in the back of my brain -- that's when a reminder like this book can be helpful.

This book is a helpful guide to what depression is and ways to overcome it. In the first chapter author John Hayes differentiates thedifferent types of depression, such as major depressive disorder, dysthymia, postpartum depression, SAD, and bipolar disorder. This is a nice overview, particularly for those who have not studied the various forms of depression previously.

There are a number of good suggestions in this book. It will be of greatest usefulness for people who suffer from relatively mild forms of depression . Those who suffer from major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder or whose depression is a result of a chemical imbalance, are less likely to be helped by these suggestions and should seek professional help.
