Harold Patterson's Small Boat Building was one of the first attempts to take the mystery out of boat construction for the average man. His book emphasizes the "do-it-yourself" attitude that amateur boatbuilders must bring to their work. He takes pains to explain just enough of the basic techniques of boatbuilding to give the beginner a good understanding of what is involved in the process. At the same time, he doesn't weigh the reader down with too much information that would be likely to discourage a novice.
