A husband’s call to active military service and a dying friend’s request propel Hannah Gibson from Kentucky to an abandoned church camp in upstate Minnesota. What was supposed to be a memorable summer vacation for her children and a few friends turns into a battle for survival when nuclear attacks transform the face of the continent. Isolated from the rest of the world, with no power or means of communication, Hannah must protect eleven children from starvation, freezing weather and traveling marauders.
Her survival becomes dependent on Dakota Eaglefeather, a local forest ranger, who realizes how ill-equipped she is for life in the Great North Woods. As they face one crisis after another, their partnership blossoms into an irrepressible love, complicated by the fact Hannah doesn’t know if her husband is dead or alive somewhere on the other side of the world.
