The Graydon sisters could not be less alike. Pamela is sweet-tempered and feminine. Slyvia is a mischievous tomboy. Their father hopes that Pamela will marry his friend, Lord Glengall. This appears unlikely when Pamela falls for Sir Anthony Trevithick. Anthony professes his love for Pamela and promptly disappears. Heartbroken and believing that Anthony does not love her, Pamela is soon swayed by the tepid attentions of the kind, wealthy and intelligent Lord Glengall.
