People learn Japanese for various reasons – some do it for fun, because they like how it sounds; some plan to visit Japan as tourists and want to learn the basics (it's nice to be able to order a favorite meal in a foreign restaurant). Many ordinary people want to know how to read original manga on their own. Many businessmen, from all over the world, learn how to communicate in Japanese language with Japanese people, because showing that you're interested in a language and culture>/b> too (and not only care about the business itself) will always be appreciated in Japanese companies.

Learn Japanese

Japan is a unique country and the language is quite unique too. It shares the writing system with Chinese – partly – but even those two languages are fundamentally different. There are many kanji – Chinese characters, used in Japan too, but that's as similar as it gets, especially in the modern Japanese, that we know today.

Welcome!

If you know how to read and write around 2000 commonly used kanji, you know enough to be considered literate. That fact can be frightening for someone who has just made the first step in learning Japanese. But the solution is simple – start learning slowly, step-by-step, at first only short, simple sentences and basic grammar.

Just a note – not to make you worry more, but to encourage you to set your studying goals higher: normally, written Japanese sentences can have several subjects and predicates, and sometimes one sentence is written in a few rows – but you will and can get to that later. For now, it's important to just understand where you're going and how much you can actually improve your knowledge later. There's time for more complex parts of the language when you understand the basics, especially for a language where even the word order is different than in English.

That's why we are going to concentrate on giving very simple explanations and examples. Although Japanese grammar can seem very confusing and difficult for a beginner, good news is – it is definitely not too hard for anyone who wants to learn.

Learning how to speak and listen in the beginning is highly recommended, even if you don't completely understand the grammatical explanations. You don't need to make yourself study many rules for this first step. While you're in a process of learning how to say and understand common phrases, and listening to the native speakers pronounce characters and words, you will slowly start to see grammatical patterns, too. That is much more useful (and easier) than trying to study all the rules by heart – and then apply them in a sentence.
How to Learn Japanese provides readers with a strong foundation, teaching them all the necessities to understand, learn and speak Japanese with ease. You will be literate when you learn with us.
