Description
The Boxer Dog That Saved Christmas Day
(A Short Story Doubling as a Guide to Help Young Children Understand the Perils of Fire in the Home)
Foreword
What follows may be a story about a cute and loveable Boxer puppy but it is primarily intended to help parents teach their children basic safety skills, mainly relating to fire in the home.
The hope is that parents will read the story out loud to their children and at various stages reiterate the important tips contained within the story telling how fires begin and how families can protect their home and belongings and most importantly safeguard themselves against fire. The story ends with the character of a firefighter pointing out the most important ways to safeguard home and family.
The story tells how a tiny Boxer puppy goes to sleep beneath the Christmas tree while the family goes to bed. They leave the tree lights turned on in case the pup gets lost in the dark and is hurt on his way upstairs.
But the story takes a potentially tragic turn when the Christmas tree catches fire while the humans in the family are in bed.
The house has a fire alarm but the batteries have worn out and can not be replaced until the shops open after Christmas day.
Aside from not having a working fire alarm, the family fails to make last minute safety checks on the home before going to bed. They have also failed to turn out the Christmas tree lights before retiring for the night.
In our story, however, only the Christmas tree is damaged, thanks to the little dog raising the alarm and alerting his family to pending disaster.
Important fire safety tips are woven into the story to help children develop an early awareness of how Christmas trees can cause house fires and to suggest what families can do to minimise the chance of fire starting in the home and how to get to safety in the event one does happen.
