A Time of Fear
Sequel to The Thanksgiving Gang
A time travel and alternate history novel of courage and terrorism.
In a month, five American cities will be devastated by suitcase nuclear bombs.
The time travelers take on their old name, The Thanksgiving Gang. They know what will happen, because they traveled to the future. They know what the result will be. They’ve seen the devastation. They know the details: Five American Cities will be targeted by nuclear suitcase bombs.
BUT, they don't know where the bombs are—and they don't know how to find them.
Janice Monahan is a beautiful heating and air conditioning engineer with a mouth like a cab driver in traffic. Along with her friends Ben Weinberg, a NYPD psychiatrist, and Wally Burton, a reporter from The New York Times, they step onto a wormhole and find themselves two years into the future. What greets the time travelers is a scene of horrible devastation, the aftermath of a nuclear explosion in Manhattan. They discover that a terrorist attack was responsible for the destruction.
Janice decides to return to the past immediately by crossing over the wormhole that brought her to the future. She has to sound the alarm before it’s too late.
As she approaches the wormhole for her return time trip, she meets a shadowy figure who she recognizes as a known terrorist. Or is he? The guy seemed pleasant, almost gentlemanly, but can she trust him? He insists that he make the time trip with her, and she reluctantly agrees. When they emerge on the other side of the time portal, Janice decides to rent a car to drive from New York City to Washington D.C. to meet with the government. She keeps a gun trained on her travelling companion.
All the while she questions her sanity, because she can’t believe that she’s a time traveler—but she is. As they set out on the New Jersey Turnpike, Janice began the most amazing adventure of her life.
“The guy didn't look or sound at all threatening,” Janice thought. “But what the hell do I know. I'm the woman who married a man committed to mass murder. I wish Bennie Weinberg was here. Bennie's a shrink with the NYPD and can smell bullshit a mile away.”
She soon discovers that things are not always what they appear to be, including her terrorist “road trip buddy,” who, she noticed, is quite handsome. Their meeting in Washington was a revelation that Janice would never forget.
The challenge, for Janice and her colleagues, is to try to keep one step ahead of the terrorists. A key is to interrogate Janice’s ex-husband, a man suspected of being at the center of the terror plot. He was the weapons officer on one of the ships that was bombed. She hates the man, but with the help of psychiatrist Doctor Bennie, she manages to engage him in conversation, a conversation that turned into a polite interrogation, and lifted the lid off the coming conspiracy.
Janice always thought of her work—heating and air conditioning—as somewhat mundane. But it’s also quite lucrative, and she’s good at what she does. She soon discovers, as did her colleagues at the highest levels of government, that she had talents that she never knew were there.
In the middle of the bomb hunt, Janice falls madly in love with a most unlikely character—her time travel and road trip buddy, who turned out not to be the man she thought he was.
Janice finds herself working hand and hand with a group of ingenious American spies, who, in turn, are amazed at Janice’s ingenuity—not to mention her courage and accuracy with a gun. The Director of the CIA tries to convince Janice to give up her engineering practice and come to work for the CIA.
The clock is ticking and millions will soon lose their lives – unless they find the bombs.
“A riveting, pulse-pounding nail-biter in the spirit of The Gray Ship and The Thanksgiving Gang. A Time of Fear will grip you and not let go, even after you finish the book.”
