Once in a While (The Cherished Memories Series Book 1) / Linda Ellen

2014 Lyra Independent Fiction Contest Romance Category Winner!
In the tradition of The Notebook comes...Once in a While.
Victor Matthews is a down on his luck young man, frustrated with his life and his inability to find gainful employment.
Louise Hoskins is a young woman content in her life with her family and friends. Her biggest concern is her upcoming lead part in a play.
One rainy night, they meet...and both are forever changed.
Neither could foresee that the world as they know it is on the precipice of experiencing the now famous ’37 Flood, and that daily life is about to be transformed into a bone chilling waterlogged state of affairs. But as that harrowing experience fades and their lives return to normal, the two young lovers embark on an unforgettable courtship - that is, until a terrible argument and a tragic misunderstanding tear them apart. How will they survive the separation? And why does one special song have the power to instantly transport the sweethearts back into the realm of cherished memories? This is a clean Southern historical romance set during the Depression Era.

Recent review:
I bought “Once In A While” from an email description that it was similar to “The Notebook” and figured “what the heck”. I started reading and then life happened (Thanksgiving, kids, school, Christmas, work) and had to put it down. I had the chance to restart it when we went on a family trip a few weeks ago and OMG!! Once I was able to “get back into it”, I couldn’t put it down! The beautiful story of a young love and even more so the hard fought circumstances of life during The Depression will get your heart. The author does a great job of relaying thoughts and unspoken feelings. It is amazing that a person confided all this to her to share-especially her own mother. Reading about the true love story almost makes the reader envious of what the special couple shares. Many times while reading I reflected on my own life and love lost years ago. To say that you get entranced in the story is an understatement. You move from a feeling of ominous woe to elation to tragedy to horror and eventually come full circle back to the “happily ever after” while all the time hanging on wanting to know more. I caught myself checking back to the front cover to the picture of Vic and Louise while reading just trying to imagine life at the time. In our lives of excess today, it’s almost shameful how we have strayed from simpler times-when less was more and….. family was more. It is so refreshing to read of young men wanting to work and having a strong moral ethic. I was so enthralled by the book that I just had to purchase the second book to start reading on the way home as soon as I finished the first! I absolutely love a TRUE love story but knowing this was based on a real life couple made it even better. I highly recommend this book series and would absolutely love seeing a movie made of the entire series!" ~ Beth Rhodes
