The Burning Room: by Michael Connelly (A Harry Bosch Novel, Book 19) | Summary & Analysis

This is an unofficial Summary & Analysis. Michael Connelly’s crime thriller, follows the story of Los Angeles Police Department detective Harry Bosch as he and a new partner, Lucia Soto, investigate in tandem the death of a mariachi musician shot some ten years previously and a 1993 fire that left several children dead. As they investigate, the two find that the former case is entangled with local and state electoral politics and the latter is connected to the famous 1997 North Hollywood Shootout. While their investigations close out long-standing cases, neither leads to convictions, and Bosch ends the book under investigation by the Department for actions he took while pursuing the cases.

The primary plot of the novel largely follows the pyramidal structure laid out by Gustav Freytag, neatly offering exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action and denouement. The novel provides an engaging story of a well-liked character and introduces a possible new focus for a series. Long-time Connelly readers will find much of what they have come to love from the author, and they can likely look forward to at least one more Bosch novel as well as books about an entirely new character.
