Description
A tale of faith and God's grace, this book is one of the most beloved Christian fables ever, and the basis for a prestigious Hallmark Hall of Fame episode. The story beautifully elaborates on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and is especially known for one of the most heartfelt and hopeful endings in religious literature.
Through the eyes of an ancient religious scholar, or wise man, readers literally follow the then newborn Jesus of Nazareth on his life's journey, from his birth at the First Christmas, to his resurrection at the First Easter decades later. Utilizing a rich understanding of the biblical era, the fable recreates the mysterious world of the magi, or wise men of the East, and leads us a pilgrimage though time.
The tale begins with imminent arrival of the infant Jesus in Bethlehem, a small village near Jerusalem. By divine prophecy, the event will usher in an era of peace and goodwill, as well as forgiveness of the sins of mankind.
Three religious scholars of the East, or wise men, make a long journey across the desert to find and worship the newborn Christ. Afterwards, the wise men, also known as magi, announce to the world that the long-awaited Savior of mankind has arrived.
The Fourth Wise Man of Christ tells of another magi named Artaban. He intended to join the first three wise men on their journey to find Christ, but through mishap, misses his rendezvous. For the next thirty years, Artaban vainly travels the Holy Land alone, hoping to meet with the steadily maturing Jesus, and present him gifts.
Instead, along the way, Artaban gradually gives away his gifts to strangers in need. That which was intended for the Savior of mankind, goes to ordinary people in distress.
Finally, decades later, the fourth wise man tragically arrives in Jerusalem on the precise weekend that Jesus Christ is to be crucified by the Roman Empire. Yet, in a surprise ending, the now penniless Artaban finds the true meaning of Christ the King.
The Presbyterian Minister Henry Dyke first published the story in 1895 as The Other Wise Man, and it became an instant classic. Theatrical and television adaptations followed, including the Hallmark Hall of Fame, and a movie. David W. Bradford translates the nineteenth-century text into modern English for this e-book edition.
