Between 4,000 and 5,000 people per day are diagnosed with diabetes in America. I am one of them. Like as many as 90% of diabetics, I have type 2 diabetes. This means that while my body still produces insulin, my body no longer uses that insulin efficiently to manage my blood sugar well. Because of this, I had to learn to do a lot of things differently, from buying food, to eating, to being aware of the impact the food I was eating was having on my body. It was a lot to learn, and as I did I wrote down this new knowledge in the hope that others might benefit from my experience.
Included are details on how I learned to:
- monitor and make sense of my blood glucose levels,
- shop for snacks and groceries,
- select sweeteners for my tea and coffee, and
make many more practical day-to-day choices.
As a result of the approach I took and the choices I made, my type 2 diabetes currently seems to be under control, without medication. I hope that by chronicling my actions, I can help others avoid reinventing the wheel as they take their first steps in learning how to live with type 2 diabetes.
