Beggars and Choosers

As Monica lay cowering on the pristine hardwood floor holding her face, she reflected on a time when she swore she would never let a man put his hands on her. But, Rodney had somehow convinced her that he was a worthy gentleman. The irony was remarkable, considering she would never have given a guy like him a chance. But her girlfriend, the self-proclaimed relationship expert, had convinced Monica that she was too choosy.

Monica turned and looked out of her picturesque window. She knew her friend had some good points. But, Monica had always been taught that the man was supposed to be the breadwinner, the provider. She never thought about the possibility that she would be the head of any household. But, alas, she was not getting any younger. She had reached the glass ceiling in her career and making buckets of money being the only female in her position. Maybe she was ready to bring home the bacon. All she needed was a man to fry it up. She wondered if Rodney could be the one. She had decided in that moment that she would at least give him a chance. But, she would later find out that once you start making concessions, it’s hard to stop. And when you have given up everything you believe in to be with someone, then they now own your soul. Monica would have to lose everything just to save her life.
