This work is adapted from selections from the Choicest Gems of Literature and Art; the Richest thoughts of the Master Minds of all ages of LIFE, LOVE AND RELIGION, HOME, COUNTRY, and HEAVEN; compiled by O. H. Fiffany D.D, published by Imperial Publishing Company Chicago, Ill. 1901. I have endeavored as much as possible to keep to the grandeur and beauty of the original works. The poems have had minor modifications, sometimes replacing obsolete words, or changing phrasing to make the meaning clearer, and easier to understand for the modern reader. In a few places I've taken poetic license and made fundamental changes to poems meaning, but that is more the exception than the rule. The original art works selected for this book have been colored, and modified. Many additional digital art pieces of my own have been added. Commentary on each poem has been added with often a brief historical context about the author. Inside this volume, one will find 49 items (average about 2 pages each), consisting of various poems and stories and more than dozen artworks associated with the items. Works by famous poets and story tellers such as William Cullen Bryant, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Richard Henry Dana, Benjamin F. Taylor, Felicia D. Hemans, Barry Cornwall, Oliver Wendell Holms, George MacDonald, Edward Youl, John H. Yates, , Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Sprague, Edgar A. Poe, Anne Barnard, Dr. Greenwood, James Montgomery, Mary A. Ford, L. A. Cobb, Felicia Hermans. William Wordsworth, William Cullen Bryant, Thomas Hood, Robert Story, Elizabeth Cook, Henry N. Cobb and others are to be found.
The poems vary from hilarious such as "Putting up the Stove Pipe" and to the "One hoss Shay", to poems about death such as the "Old Wife's Kiss". I was working through building this book while my father was in palliative care. I found much encouragement, and reflection on life in these great poems from the past. For those that love poetry, or for those home schooling and wanting a selection of poems and stories this volume should be considered. If you have interest in poetry but haven't really looked into English heritage in poetry, "ReCut and Polished Gems of Literature and Art" I offer this collection as a place to start.
