Description

Truth is received through either reason or revelation. You either think your way through the maze to find truth or truth is given from a reliable source. The Christian faith is based upon God's own self-revelation, not the conflicting opinions or untrustworthy speculations of men. As the Apostle Paul wrote: "your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God" (First Corinthians 2:5).

The message of the Christian faith is, therefore, rooted in and circumscribed by God's own revealed word - not the authoritative words of men. Where is God's Word found? The New Testament letter of Hebrews 1:1-2, "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by His Son."

What is bibliology? Bibliology is the study of the ideas of Scripture. It answers the question: what is the Bible? Bibliology discusses ideas like revelation, inspiration, inerrancy, authority, unity, tradition, two testaments, and interpretation.

Why is it important? Bibliology is very important because it serves as an understanding for the source document for all other theological study. The primary expression of God’s will and God’s words are the Bible. The Bible is God’s Written Word and it reveals what we learn about Jesus Christ, wickedness, salvation, and spirituality. If we cannot agree on the bibliology, we find little common ground for further discussion because our source material is different.

With the importance of bibliology in mind, let us begin by remembering what the Bible says about itself, its purpose, and its power. Remember Second Timothy 3:16-4:2, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.”

May our relationship with God, understanding of God’s Written Word, and studied systematic theology, always and completely be found pleasing to God the Father, Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
