FUNDRAISING
Here are some of the trends that will affect fundraising in Africa:-
1. Increasingly, more Africans are becoming entrepreneurial and are starting their own businesses in the wake of liberalization. This entrepreneurial spirit can be brought to bear on the opportunities and challenges facing voluntary organizations.
2. In our time the number of persons aged 50 years and over will increase three times and as they retire, they will have more time to volunteer. And volunteers are 66% more likely to make gifts to charity than non volunteers.
3. African working men and women are seeking balance in their lives. As they do so, they are increasingly discovering the joys of volunteering. This translates into more time for volunteer activities as people in their 20s and 30s look for meaning beyond their jobs and material possessions.
4. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening. More people are in need of help in these countries than at any other time; even more alarming is the rapidly growing number of children living below the poverty line.
5. Donors, especially foundations and corporations, are more interested in “outcomes’. They want NGOs or CBOs to prove that the programmes they help support are effective in changing lives.
6. Successful voluntary organizations will continue to monitor their internal and external environments, in response to their rapidly changing circumstances.
7. Information technology will later alter everyone’s life. To flourish, NGOs/CBOs will need to learn to communicate effectively using the internet and emerging electronic technologies.
8. The voluntary sector will come under scrutiny. Self regulation and cooperation with state legislative and regulatory agencies will be needed to preserve confidence in the integrity of the nations’ voluntary sector.
