In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery—and everything changes. Suddenly, there’s reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.

Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine—and what he will become is far more dangerous.

Interview with J. N. Chaney

Q: This is your first book, correct? How long have you been writing?

A. Yes, this is my first novel. I've written several short stories and published a few articles, but never anything like this. As for how long I've been doing this, I started writing when I was 16. My first story was actually a science fiction, space exploration adventure story about me and my friends discovering a space ship in my back yard. We traversed the galaxy, unlocking hidden powers and fighting intergalactic threats along the way. It was terribly written and super cheesy.

Q: What sort of genres do you typically read? Are they the same as what you write?

A. I read a lot of science fiction, but not as many apocalypse books as people think. The Amber Project is Dystopian young adult fiction, but I don't normally read a ton of that. My favorite books are Ender's Game, Old Man's War, The Great Gatsby, Paradise Lost, Cat's Cradle, Sirens of Titan, and The Gunslinger. A few of those influenced this book, but not all. A lot of my influences came from other forms of entertainment, like films and video games. I grew up playing games like Fallout and Bioshock, so there's plenty of influences there.

Q: Where did you get the idea for the Variant gas? It's very interesting how it works. Did you have to do a lot of research?

A: Oh, yeah, a ton. It was ridiculous. I still don't know if I got the science 100% right. It's hard to really know for sure when you're dealing with something this theoretical. But that's the thing about writing genetic engineering science fiction--you have to be as accurate as possible. The people who read these books are highly intelligent, so their standards are higher than most. You have to raise the bar, you know? I had to read about three books on genetics before I was comfortable enough to sit down and work everything out. After that, I emailed several people I knew who worked in that field, asking questions and begging for information. I'm sure they hated me!

Q: You also touch on some themes in this book: child soldiers, social classes, and the ethics of human experimentation. There's even a little feminism in there. Was all of that intentional?

A: Not all of it. The child soldiers were always part of the plan, but the social classes weren't. As for the feminism, I don't know. I just think it's better to write strong female characters, just like you would if they were male. I hate damsels in distress. That's not reality. We've got female soldiers in the military. I've met them. I've worked with them. I've also met women who are smarter than I could ever hope to be. Why not reflect that in fiction?

Q: So where do you see your next book going? You've tackled dystopian science fiction. What's next?

A: I've still got a few 'end of the world' novels left in me. I also have to finish this trilogy. But after that? Probably space exploration. I have some ideas for that.
