Description

A book about running and human resources? Really?

Yes, really. These two activities are integral parts of the lives of mine and so many others. Recently I realized that there was an amazing community of professionals that shared both of these interests, and that encouraged me to write this book.

Why do I run?

Several of the individuals that I surveyed had wonderfully descriptive reasons. Barb said it best:

Running completes me.

That’s truly how I feel as well. I can face a challenging day, fight through the mud and muck of an investigation, sit through a dozen interviews, or lecture my managers on how to give proper feedback, but when I step outside for a run, it all fades into the background.

People often ask how I can love this so much. It’s funny, because I wonder how they can’t! There are numerous research studies that focus on the mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Between that and the physical gains to be had by exercising, I’m sold on it for life.

You know what else I’m sold on? Human resources.

I don’t just work in HR. I do it outside of work as well. For more than six years (and counting) I have spent my time outside of my day job writing, researching, speaking, and consulting on human resources and recruiting. It is a passion of mine, and the mission statement on my website is as true today as it was when I started.

My mission is to make human resources better, one HR pro at a time.

This book is a result of that passion, and while I hope it brings you joy and entertainment, I also hope that it offers some wisdom as well to rekindle that fire in your spirit to do HR well. The world needs us to be at our best.

So, lace up your shoes. Grab your water bottle. We’re heading to the starting line.

Within these pages you will find stories from my own mishaps (and the lessons learned). In addition, I have profiled some of the people from this community that have combined their love of running and HR for better results in life and work. You'll meet everyday HR pros who use running for stress relief, idea generation, and just plain entertainment.

Someone asked me recently, "Do I need to be a runner to enjoy this book?" My response is definitely not! You will get a laugh at some of the crazy things we do, but you certainly don't have to be in order to pick up some HR, business, and career development lessons.
