Preview of Chapter 1: A Marriage In Trouble
Something’s not right. You and your spouse are fighting all the time, or maybe you just aren’t connecting anymore. You feel that it’s only a matter of time before your marriage fails, and you don’t know the steps you should take to start to repair a marriage that’s falling apart. Let’s examine some of the reasons why marriages ‘fail’.
• Addiction. This could be hard drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or marijuana. It could be gambling or strip clubs. It could be a favorite video game. Addictions not only suck up your money, but they suck up your time and focus as well.
• Money and financial issues. Anyone that’s been married longer than a few weeks can tell you that money is a stressor in any marriage. Bills, debt, and spending habits should be major topics for married couples to talk about regularly. Those three topics have also been a major reason why relationships have ended.
• Sex. This could mean the following things: one partner isn’t getting what they feel is enough, feels like they are being demanded of too much, it’s not satisfying enough, or they are doing it with someone outside of the marriage.
• Lack of time. It’s hard to have a relationship with someone when they are never around.
• Abuse. While many abusive relationships drag on for a very long time, ultimately, both emotional and physical abuse will result in the end of the relationship.
• Lack of support from friends and family. Friends and family that are negative and unsupportive to a marriage make it difficult to give either spouse a place to go to talk about their problems and get helpful advice. It can be easy to allow the negative thoughts of friends and family to poison our intentions, even in our own marriage.
• A lack of communication. Maybe you hardly see each other, or when you do see each other, you aren’t really communicating. Either way, unless there is an open flow of communication about life, your family, hopes, dreams, worries, and most importantly, your marriage, your union is doomed to have problems.
Realistically, most marriages have more than one of these areas that could use a little work. It’s a combination of one or more of these that start to kill a marriage from the inside out, and once one of these ‘marriage killers’ has taken residence deep inside your union, it can be hard to kick them out.
