Description
His story was unbelievable. It would have been, that is, if he weren’t so personally credible. Seldom in my counseling practice do I see a client so seemingly “together.†Enthusiasm radiated from his countenance. His body language spoke of energy, vitality, and hope. An unspoken “Life is an adventure!†seemed to be welling up from within him, and splashing on everyone he met. He was a joy to be around.
Two years earlier, this young man was involved in a horrible automobile accident. Upon impact, his car had burst into flames. Onlookers saw two men appear out of nowhere, approach the burning car, drag this young man to safety, and disappear as quickly as they’d come. To this day, this Christian man and many of the onlookers believe that they witnessed him being delivered from that crash, without a scratch or a burn, by angels from the Lord.
He’d not come to see me for counseling. He’d come for spiritual direction: “Help me discover what the Lord wants me to do. God obviously has a reason for delivering me from that wreck and a purpose for me to accomplish.†He found every day exciting as he patiently searched for life’s purpose. I find that kind of pilgrimage a lot among those who believe they’ve experienced Divine deliverance. Acknowledging God’s involvement in our lives seems to change us forever. To use the words I hear so frequently from the delivered, “We’re never the same again.†The stories of divine intervention are endless: A husband is silently contemplating leaving his wife for his mistress when the preacher’s words refocus his attention on the wife of his youth. A teenager is thinking suicidal thoughts at the very moment that his dad feels the urgency to tell his son how much he loves him. The boy dismisses his self-destructive thoughts. On and on the stories go.
I think it’s time to come out of the closet and announce our belief that God is alive and active in our world today. I share such stories because too long we’ve blushed to share them. I hope that is about to change.
