As the single human deemed fit to map anomalies in space, Jack Haagenz works for the galactic government surveying starfields and galactic real-estate. After a long vacation, he returns to the office and is charged with performing a quick investigation of a new black hole that's forming, calculate its size, scope, and potential dangers, then report back to his superiors on whether or not it's a threat to the local planets (and if they'll have to re-route the hyperspace lanes around it). Along the way he's flushed through a wormhole, his ship is hijacked, he's captured by and escapes from a primitive race of warrior-women, and ultimately learns the truth behind where the black hole came from and why it's there...and the truth could very well kill him, and two entire planets of innocent bystanders.
