Description
Escape from East Tennessee to the Federal Lines, first published in 1910, is a firsthand, down-to-earth account of a young man's experiences during the American Civil War. Caught in the dangerous divided ground of Tennessee, the author, whose loyalties lay with the North, is arrested and imprisoned by the Rebels but soon released. After a short time, he is to be arrested again, but flees his home and goes into hiding for the next 18 months. He attempts to get safety in the North but without success. Given his familiarity with the region, he eventually leads a group of more than 100 Federal sympathizers over 200 miles to safety in Kentucky, the men in constant danger, and hungry and mostly bare-footed. Later, the author served as a Union Captain, and describes some of his experiences in General Sherman's march on Atlanta. Included are 6 pages of illustrations.
