Description

Who am I? I’m that quiet little nurse in the corner of the room anticipating every possible need of your doctor while trying to provide you with the emotional and empathetic support that you desire at the same time.
Some of you see me as an annoyance and just an obstacle to your prescription for an antibiotic or the x-ray that a website you found on google convinced you that you needed based on your symptoms. You even think that my silly request to take your blood pressure and answer some questions is a means for me to pass the time or just stall the appointment so the doctor can make a phone call or socialize in the back of the office.
Others see me as their possible lifeline. You quickly try to develop; a friendly relationship with me, acting as if we are longtime buddies, while asking me questions which you feel could predict my ethical temperature. These are usually the pain medicine seeking patients that want to be my best friend thinking that I may be a ticket to what they are wanting. The friendship quickly dissolves once you find out I will be of no help to you so you oblige me with your blood pressure while searching out the next staff person in the office that could possibly be your new best friend. Good Luck.
The above patient types are not my focus in this book. I want to talk to the patients that may be feeling confused with what is going on within their body or just want to gain knowledge and guidance from their physician as to how they can treat, manage, understand, and deal with symptoms they are experiencing. You are why I chose nursing as the mission field for my life. You are the person I want to help.
Before you see the doctor, I can help you prepare for your interaction with him/her so that you can use the limited time you have with him or her to your full advantage.
After the doctor sees you and moves onto the next patient, I can stay with you to review and reiterate what the doctor’s recommendations were for you and the next steps you will need to take.
But, during your appointment,It’s all on you. You are the main player in the game. No matter how much I want to yell “time out” when I feel like you need to regroup or make a game change, that is not my call to make. You are the patient and this is your appointment.
Just know that I am in the corner quietly cheering for you, and I will be there to ice your injuries when the appointment is over.
In the following tips, I will teach you what you need to know to plan for your doctor’s appointment whether in a healthcare clinic, primary care office, or hospital. Each tip is divided into easy and concise numerical steps.
I will also help you to identify your expectations for the appointment, understand the role of the nurse or trained medical staff that will meet with you prior to the time with your doctor, and explain the expectations your doctor has of you.
Yes, you have a responsibility and a voice in the process too. After all, this is your body we are talking about, right?
By putting this plan for your appointment together, you will be empowered to communicate effectively with your doctor which will reduce your anxiety about the appointment, ensure that you leave the appointment with your questions answered and with the information you desired, feel confident in the treatment plan developed with your doctor, and be encouraged to take control of your own health with the assistance of your doctor and healthcare team.
