Description

This volume contains the COMPLETE Christ and Antichrist Trilogy, by russian author and 9 times nominated to the Nobel Prize, Dmitri Merejkovsky.
1. THE DEATH OF THE GODS (JULIAN THE APOSTATE)
2. THE ROMANCE OF LEONARDO DA VINCI: (THE FORERUNNER)
3. PETER AND ALEXIS (THE ROMANCE OF PETER THE GREAT)

This acclaimed series starts with the Death of the Gods Exploring the theme of the 'two truths', those of Christianity and the Paganism, and developing Merezhkovsky's own religious theory of the Third Testament, it became the first in "The Christ and Antichrist" trilogy. The novel made Merezhkovsky a well-known author both in Russia and Western Europe.

The second novel, praised by Sigmund Freud in his own book about Da Vinci, starts with the merchant Buonarcozzi digging out the statue of Venus, with Leonardo invited as an expert. This echoes the final scene of The Death of the Gods with Arsinoya's prophecy about "future brothers" who will dig out the precious bones of Hellas, and start worshipping them again. The adventures of the great artist and thinker of the Renaissance are set against the background of conflicts and tragedies, all going to show the new epoch's re-emerging humanism, harking back to the spirit of Antiquity and contrasting the monastic horrors of the Middle Ages.

The final novel, set in the pre modern times Russia of the 18th century, is about Peter I of Rusia and Alexis Petróvich Románov. Peter's only son, Alexis embodied in himself the Christian virtues of humility, meekness, and compassion. Aware of his father's disappointment in him, he supports the old believers and eventually becomes a martyr of Christianity himself...

The authors theory of the Third Testament , borrowed the original idea from Joachim of Fiore, a 12th-century theologist. Merezhkovskys created and developed their own concept of man's full-circle religious evolution. In it the Bible was seen as a starting point with God having taken two steps towards Man, for the latter to respond with the third, logically conclusive one.
