At the dawn of the Victorian era a cloaked, fire-breathing figure attacked a young woman on her doorstep in the East End of London. And so began a trail of terror that spread to various parts of England and which lasted into Edwardian times. "Jack" did not always take the same form or dress in the same way, and some of the visitations can readily be ignored as the work of drunks or tricksters. But others cannot be dismissed so lightly.
