The future never followed through on its promises. Rampant civil unrest and unprecedented black markets have moved in to fill voids left by late stage capitalism.
Power is at a premium, which leaves populations of countries both first world and third with intermittent access to basic amenities such as networks and computational processing.
It is in this mess that NYPD undercover Detective Jasmine Harris tries to eek out a living and look after the only two people she has ever allowed herself to get close to in her life: SARGE, her supervisor in Splay Vice Unit and BAY, her partner and tech specialist.
Together these three infiltrate a variety of both governmental and criminal enterprises, on both sides of the law, on a for hire basis. It's not easy work. And it's not pretty. But it's necessary for them both to make a living and hopefully support funding for basic city utilities and upkeep of a crumbling infrastructure. The problem is, bureaucratic corruption sees to it that little gets left over after the vultures peck away at the bounties they return with.
On this mission, the three members of Splay Vice decide to infiltrate Narcotics Division when they find out there's an incoming source of the best cocaine in NYC. Once inside Harris uses her sexual powers of persuasion to get all the way to the inner office so she can install a bug, literally a crawling robot the size of a flea that can wedge itself through the seals on a microserver.
The mission then takes some twists and turns and brings both Harris and Bay all the way to Acapulco, Mexico...and into the middle of a bloody cartel turf war for inland mountainous smuggling routes through the spine of the country and up into the U.S.
All along the partners utilize technology when and how they can, relying heavily on their AR/VR lenses, contacts that display an array of filters, apps, augmentations, and even immersive environments over their lines of sight.
But it's a race against time, because Sarge, their elder mentor and the founder of Splay Vice, is sick with some festering disease that is slowly fusing him to his seat back at HQ on Staten Island. Hi tech health care is only something the highest of officials can afford and Sarge is certainly uninsured, lacking any workplace benefits.
This could be it for him if Bay and Harris don't put aside their personal squabbles and sexual tensions. They need to do their job and return to New York with a suitcase full of cash, cocaine, or intel on the cartels that could potentially be sold to the Feds for a handsome reward...
