THE ART OF REDEMPTION

Mark Guthrie was just an average guy. In Traverse City, Michigan he owned a martial arts studio where he instructed students in the Taekwondo by focusing on the traditional tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. Life is good for Mark until, while stopping a robbery, he kills one of the would-be thieves in the process. The police rule it self-defense and many in the community view him as a hero, but Mark can’t get the image of the unfortunate event out of his head. He decides the only thing he can do is get as far away as possible, so he moves to the tiny town of Bluffton, South Carolina.

Janie Betters has a past of her own. Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, Janie was anything but a prototypical southern belle. Too many drugs and too many men lead to Tommy, her son. When Tommy’s drug dealing father beats Janie one night while in a drunken stupor, she realizes that if she is going to provide a decent life for Tommy, she has to make a change. She gets clean and moves to Bluffton to try and make a living doing the only thing she was ever any good at, art. Her paintings sell enough to pay the bills, and life in the quiet town is good.

Tommy, now twelve, isn’t as thrilled with their new life. Always angry and unable to understand why he was taken away from the only home he ever knew. When he picks a fight with four older boys, he’s fortunate that Mark is there to defend him. Janie tracks him down to thank him, and an unlikely romance begins but given the baggage each carries, it is anything but storybook.

Can these two people, given their respective pasts, find happiness together? This is put to the test when Tommy’s father comes to Bluffton to reconnect with him and Janie, and won’t take no for an answer. Can Mark avoid repeating history in a confrontation with the man? Can Janie keep herself, and more importantly her son, from slipping back into a destructive lifestyle? Or will both of them have to face that some mistakes you never quit paying for?
