In 1967, twenty-two year old David Sanders returns from two tours in Vietnam to the Northwest Indiana steel town of East Chicago. He is taciturn and dangerous. With a long standing reputation for skilled violence, Sanders is hired by Nino Abate, a ruthless a loan shark, to collect delinquent debts.Sanders executes his job with cool detachment but with each confrontation he begins to understand the misery in the tortured lives of the people he encounters and the sorrow he carries. .
