Description

This album contains a radio performance from Joni Mitchell from two sets at the Club 47 in Cambridge Massachusetts in January 1968. Includes songs never released officially on any studio album Gift of the Magi," "Ballerina Valerie", "The Way it is" and "Come to the Sunshine". All tracks restored and mastered in the studio. A companion album to the previously issued Through Yellow Curtains . Liner notes by Broadcaster/Author Jon Kirkman. Joni Mitchell is one of the great singer songwriters of her age. Her career began in the sixties through the folk clubs and coffee houses, where she learned to project as an artist and perform the unique songs she wrote. Coming to the attention of many through other artists' interpretation of her songs such as Tom Rush, Judy Collins and in the UK Fairport Convention, Joni was able to sign to Reprise records and with the release of her debut album emerged as one of the pioneers of the American singer songwriter movement. Joni Mitchell however was never able to stay in one place and re wrote the book on song composition. The audio source for the music contained on this release is actually from two different concerts and a radio broadcast. The first eight tracks are thought to come from a performance at Club 47 bin Cambridge Massachusetts in January 1968. The next six tracks originate from a different performance also at the same venue. A number of songs performed here would appear on Joni Mitchell's first three albums Song To A Seagull, Clouds and Ladies Of The Canyon. More interestingly there are a number of songs that have never been released on an official studio album and yet these songs were a big part of Joni Mitchell's live set prior to signing with Reprise Records in late 1967. These songs are as good as anything Joni Mitchell performed but she was so prolific the songs were probably just replaced by other more recent songs that Joni considered superior. The songs here include Ballerina Valerie, Gift Of The Magi, Come To The Sunshine and The Way It Is.
