Lainey Skyler doesn't believe in fairies. Or mermaids. Or dryads or any other "imaginary" friends. After all, it's easy to doubt something only you can see. And that's the key to fitting in. As long as she says the right things and sees the right things, people will think she's just another teenager. Mostly. Then along comes Sebastian and turns her carefully crafted image upside down.

On their first date, he catches a clear glimpse of a couple of mermaids, and he has no problem talking about it. The encounter pushes him into a quest to delve the mysteries she's spent a lifetime shoving into the back of her mind, and Lainey finds herself reluctantly dragged into the middle of it.

At first, their search uncovers only more questions and mysteries. Why are Lainey and Sebastian the only ones who can see fairies? Why do the fairies want Sebastian to come with them? And why are they trying to push Lainey away? Then just when they're on the verge of discovery, Sebastian disappears.

The police think he's been kidnapped. They've even recovered evidence implicating Lainey's father in his disappearance, but Lainey suspects something far more sinister. The only person who would believe her theory, unfortunately, is the very person who's gone missing, but she can't ignore the truth any longer. If Lainey Skyler is going to free her father and rescue Sebastian, one thing is quite clear: she'll have to start believing in fairies again.
