It’s June, 1982 and eleven-year old Luna Fitch is ready for another summer at her grandmother’s house in the country where she’ll spend her days in the nearby woods discovering wild creatures and all sorts of mysterious stuff that seem to beckon her upon her arrival. And since most of the kids her age annoy the crap out of her—especially the bitches, Luna’s on her own; and she prefers it that way. Known for her intrepid nature and feisty spirit, Luna is perfectly content to spend the summer alone, having long conversations with God while she roams through the woods with the neighbor’s dogs. Historically, anytime Luna discovers a wild creature or anything mysterious in the woods no one believes her—especially the grownups, which is why she decides she never wants to be a grownup, mostly because she doesn’t like their outlook on life. So when she discovers what she’s sure to be a shocking secret hidden in the woods, she decides it’s probably best to keep it to herself. Luna’s grandmother is always telling her that everything happens for a reason, and while she’s not sure why the thing she discovered in the woods is out there, she’s determined to find out. The Walking Stick ultimately takes Luna on an adventure of a lifetime, leaving a profound impact over the many years that follow, bringing her life full circle while reminding her that everything does in fact happen for a reason.
