Description
It is time now to introduce myself. I am Gaylon Barrow, a cousin to Clyde Barrow. My father was Earl Barrow, son of Oscar Barrow of Titus County Texas and first cousin to Clyde’s father, Henry. Henry and Oscar were both descendants of Warren Barrow and Mary Polly Heath who were married September 17, 1810 In warren County, Georgia. Warren was born before 1785 in Beaufort County, NC. He was the son of John Barrow and Jemima, (Unknown). Warren was a slave owner owning sixteen slaves to work his plantation.
Warren had six children with two of the sons named, Harmon Hugh Barrow, my Great, Great, Grandfather, who gave birth to James Sanklin Barrow, my Great, Grandfather who in turn fathered my Grandfather, Oscar Barrow. One of the other boys was named Thomas William Barrow, the father of James R. Barrow, (nicknamed Jim), He fathered Henry Barrow the father of Clyde. Henry also had two brothers named, Green, and Reuban.
After Warren passed away his will was broken up with the slaves going to each of his children and his finances properly divided among his children. Polly having preceded him in death his belongings went equally to his children. Not wishing to be caught up in the Civil war that was already underway. Thomas William headed for Florida but not until after the family had disposed of the Slaves by giving each their freedom.
Harmon Hugh moved his family to Titus County, Texas where Oscar Barrow my grandfather was born. Three of this family’s males went back to Georgia to fight in the Civil war. Two did not return. Thomas William made his home in Florida where James R. Barrow was born. Thomas and Hugh maintained a strong relationship and never broke ties with the other. Those close ties would eventually bring James R. (Jim) Barrow, his son Henry and family to Texas. Jim relocated around the Nacogdoches, Texas area. Henry a first cousin of Oscar Barrow of Titus Country bought a large farm in Marion Country, Texas. Thomas had never lost touch with his brother Hugh. There was only one difference between the two brothers. Hugh believed sternly in education where Thomas didn’t think it necessary to have education to be a farmer and considered it a waste of time. Hugh’s guidance of his boys saw to it that four of them gained a college education. Through the two brothers Hugh and Thomas’ communication and occasional visits between the two brothers caused James to form a lasting relationship with John Sanklin Barrow. They kept in touch throughout the years following the Civil War until finally the Carpetbaggers drove Thomas to split up his holdings and leave Alabama. James (Jim) Barrow in turn split his inheritance among his three sons. Henry, Green, and another son Reuban, thought to be living in Central Texas close to Waco, Mabank and possibly outside Hillsboro. The Barrow family would also include those places for their children to live out the summers and gatherings for family visits.
Henry took his inheritance money and bought a small farm in Jones Prairie outside Hughes Springs, Marion, County Texas. Not knowing that the land in that area was mostly Iron Ore and not fit for farming. He tried to meek out a living in useless crops, but after a few years he saw that it was an impossible task. During this period, he and Cumie had two children born. Nellie M. Barrow was born in 1904.
Marvin Ivan (Buck) Barrow (Infamous member of the Barrow gang), was born March 14, 1905. A couple of his older children had already left for Dallas, Texas. Henry would soon relocate to Telico, Texas.
