Emma is the eldest daughter of the Reverend John Bellingham and his wife Lucy. Beautiful and intelligent, Emma prefers to immerse herself in books and newspapers rather than idle gossip. When the West Yorkshire Regiment are stationed close to her village the family is invited to an officer's ball.

Lieutenant Julian Neave is a dashing soldier, the son of a rich Yorkshire soldier. When he asks Emma to dance she has every hope of a successful evening in the company of the most handsome man she's ever seen.
