Treacherous Trannies: 2007 - 2012

Treacherous Trannies is a coming of age diorama set against the backdrop of NYC’s eccentric East Village and the obsessive vintage boutique culture that it bred during the end of the decade. Keke recalls his experiences, through a seemingly continuous inner dialogue as a shopgirl working for the obscure candy store that for unknown reasons grows a cult following both in customers and employees.

Creative orphans find themselves flung together in a space that both creates tension and lifelong friendships as they seek emotional refuge in the family atmosphere the shop provides. Through sarcasm and deadpan humour the metamorphosis of the characters is seen under a merciless magnifying glass, strewing juicy entrails across the page with trivial sidenotes in the same breath.

The raw, excitable and annoying thoughts of Keke transports the reader through past and current episodes with jarring fluidity to explore the topics of gender identity, career aspirations, office politics, sex and partying like a gallery girl
