The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy describes the adventures of Arthur Philip Dent, a young British man; and his friend, Ford Prefect, an alien disguised as a man for years.

The book opens with a situation where bulldozers are at Arthur's house to destroy it in order to allow construction of a bypass in the area.
