Animated Numbers

Animated Numbers is a book of 10 piano compositions which span the oeuvre of contemporary composer Miroslav Miša Savi?. Like colours, numbers do not have a proper meaning nor can be objectively defined, they only carry arbitrary meanings we attach to them. Musical compositions presented here all come to life through some aspect of a number. For example, by defining the MIDI and rapid expansion of algorithmic composition, practical dimensions of numbers become important in the development of musical work. Creating music for keyboard instruments was chosen for several reasons: piano music is an illustration in the visual arts - it is also a possible sketch of bare musical ideas and parade of monochrome codes. Technical possibilities of keyboard instruments and piano allow an endless number of expressive possibilities. And finally, this collection of compositions represents a potential source for many performances. The illustrations in this book are part of Savic's extensive artistic activities in which the piano is the theme: performances and installations offer a glimpse of a different treatment of the instrument compared to the standard piano practice.
