This is a story full of bad jokes because those are the only ones Tommy Dugdale, a failed stand-up comic, knows.
Alec Swipple, assistant-manager in Human Resources (although he possesses very few of them himself) at a London firm is Tommy's long-suffering best mate.
The third player in this farce is tough-as-nails Gillian, Tommy's girlfriend. She likes Tommy because he makes her laugh. (Just being himself, he's a very funny man. It's only when he gets up on a stage that people want to burn him at the stake.) Gillian's chief attraction for Tommy is that she's shorter than he is. Most women can rest their elbows on the top of his head.
There is a fourth player - Martin Bullock. Martin doesn't utter a single word throughout the story, which isn't surprising because he's dead. But he becomes the weighty central character in it the deader he gets as Tommy and Alec try to get rid of him.
No easy task.
At one stage, Tommy mutters, "I hope Martin's soul is in heaven, because we haven't given his body any peace the whole weekend."
