What happens when tough army scout Clay McDermitt meets ladylike greenhorn Deborah Chandler? After he finds her as sole survivor of an Indian raid, he has to decide whether to help her find her missing brother among raging rapids, cougar attacks, and mining camps, or keep to his iron resolve to make a new life for himself, alone, as he's always been, in the green mountains of Oregon.
