In the least-attractive part of the Roman Empire, the least-attractive Britons are plotting rebellion. Or they would, if only they knew how. Keith Ramsbottom, leader of rebel group SORE (Scourge of the Roman Empire), his hopeless side-kick Horace and slave-girl Pulchritude do their level best, and sometimes their uneven best, to hinder the process of Romanisation that is sweeping their beloved settlement of Effluvium. Which admittedly does need a good sweep.
There's a new governor in town. Well, what passes for a town. Self-obsessed, uninterested in the people and with seriously-strange hair, he's out for what he can get and as governor, he can get quite a lot. The only thing standing, but mostly lying, in his way is Keith Ramsbottom and his plucky band of rebels. This is probably why Maximus rubs his tiny hands together a lot.
Keith has a lot on his plate- Maximus' plan for a giant wall. the need to raise money to fund the resistance and his own extremely-unrequited crush on Pulchritude. Horace's suggestion of a bigger plate doesn't help. To make matters worse, Keith discovers he has a mole in his organisation. If only he knew what that was (both mole and organisation).
