Mr. Sayle's gaze is speculative now, sizing me up. In the next moment, his eyes slightly widen, the pupils grow smaller, and his hands uncross to white-knuckle grip the desk behind him.

Oh boy. What did I do?

"Well done, Ms. Hofacker. I hope... Max will come through this time. He’s notorious for changing his mind at the last minute." The hidden words for your sake were implied in his pause.

"Yes, Mr. Sayle."

"Um, have you been given a company phone yet?"

"Yes, Mr. Sayle."

"Good. Please keep it on and with you at all times."

"Yes, Mr. Sayle."

I answer him in simple sentences on purpose. I don’t want to hear my own voice. His is much more important... and hot.

I nod.

He scratches the stubble on his chin, and I immediately grow jealous of his fingers. He juts from his perch and stands. "Come along, Ms. Hofaker. I'll take you to work."
