Description

Take a deep dive into the underworld of mind and memory. A one-of-a-kind epic mystery exploring the light and dark sides of Alzheimer's.

Meet the exuberant Lucky Wellington, a plastic surgeon sucked down the rabbit hole of dementia and into a murky underworld of despair but also wonder. Confined to a research asylum of hapless fellow inmates and conniving medical staff, Lucky is determined against all odds to explain and address both the disappearance of his memory and why he, or at least his reeling brain, has become so coveted by the powers that be.

Late one night, Lucky is visited in his quarters by a mysterious seductress who then disappears before morning but not before suggesting they are both in grave danger. Through no fault of his own, he finds himself entangled in a chivalrous search to save her, aided only by his courage and remaining wit, a handicapped staff barber, and a snowy Arctic owl.

On a risky quest for clues, Lucky is forced to confront questions of love, loyalty, and freedom as well as more modern-day issues such as devaluation of human memory in a silicon-driven world, the horrors of institutionalization, and an incurable neurological curse of unfathomable consequences. While planning the rescue of his lover and their escape back into the clear light of day, he grows obsessed with documenting his observations, thoughts, and theories.

Although the novel presents a major editorial distillation of Lucky's barely legible personal journals and incoherent audiotapes, it preserves his stream-of-consciousness commentary as well as his digressive riffs on memory and its foibles. What emerges is a no-holds-barred adventure infused with honesty, humor, and heart, not the story of a depressed helpless victim but rather a jinxed superhero for what may soon come to be called The Age of Alzheimer's
