The First Stages of Modernization in Spanish America (Crosscurrents in Latin America)

That output was directed toward foreign markets stemmed not from the fact that some of the production factors came from abroad, but more importantly, from the lack of markets for these products in the countries where they were exploited. We shall not only attempt to isolate the common features of this process within nineteenth-century Latin American economies but also to note the extent of their differences and the circumstances and factors which provoked their dissimilar responses.
